My check engine light came on tonight.

My check engine light came on tonight. I checked the oil and the radiator and they seemed fine. The car was not over heating. I just moved from Denver to Honolulu. One guy said he might be the 02 sensor.

Answer:
You need to get a scan done to find out what is causing the light to show. Try the local parts store, most of them does it for free. I would require the exact error code to understand what is happening?

If you had just topped up gas, then check if the gas cap is tightly closed, with at least 3 clicks when closing.

2003 discovery misfire code po306

Question:
I have a 03 discovery misfire code po306 i changed plugs, wires, coils, performed leakdown test ok, comp is 180 ,fuel psi is 55 checked for vacuum leak ok ,do you think the problem is the fuel injector. have you ever seen this problem before on a land rover. also i looked in the cylinder and the center of the piston is clean, spark plug is black

Answer:
From what you are describing I would Say it is definitely the injector being stuck open. You have eliminated most of the other reason it could be doing this. About the only other thing that might cause this would be the O2 Sensors giving false reading. If all the plugs look black on that side of the engine and not just #6. Replacing just the front O2Sensor would correct this.

06 Malibu, no start, clicking sounds, battery is charged.

Question:
I tried to autostart my Malibu Maxx with my key fob, like I usually do. But it made a rapid clicking noise and did not start. The security light on the cluster flashed in unison with the clicks. I tried to start with the key, but the clicking continued when I turned the ignition. The noise is coming from under the dash, not engine compartment. Eventually the battery died. I got a jump and it started. I drove for an hour to charge the battery, locked the car with the key fob, and when I tried to start an hour later it clicked a little then the battery died. What is wrong?

Answer;

You either have a defective battery that will not hold a charge or you have a parasitic draw from something in the car not shutting off and drawing power with the car shut off.

First have the battery tested to determine if it needs to be replaced. Once you know you have a good battery, if you still have the problem, here is what you have to do.

There is a procedure for finding a battery draw like that.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 10 minutes to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.

I am trying to change the dirver side headlight.

I have a 1993 Geo Prizim and I am trying to change the dirver side headlight. I have the battery out and the bulb replaced but cannot ge it to lock back into place. Do I need to remove the entire headlight to replace this bulb? If so how? Already Tried:
I have replace the passenger side headlight with ease now I cannot get the driver side eadlight back in due to the battery and other tight spots. I think my hands are not small enough to fight into the tight spot!

Answer:
You should not have to pull entire lamp assy. Yes it is tight. You may want to try putting a small amount of grease on o ring as a dry one can be tight to install. Be sure you have correct bulb for car and notch (s) are the same. If you can just wiggle and push some. You will get it. Be careful not to touch bulb glass or you will be doing this often :( . Lastly, if its in you way, move it. Some big hands etc do require more things to be removed to replace parts

I am having problem with my 97 aurora, it wont start

Question:

I am having problem with my 1997 Oldsmobile aurora 4.0l, it wont start in the mourning but once it is warm it starts without a problem. If you turn the key 5-6 times in the mourning to build up pressure the car starts first try. Is this the fuel pump? Already Tried: I changed the fuel pressure regulator and it did not help. I also started to put fuel injector cleaner and it helped but it still has trouble starting.

Answer:

That could be the fuel pump, however, you will want to check the pressure with and without the return blocked off. Most times it is that the fuel pump is letting the pressure leak back into the tank. You can check it with a fuel pressrue gauge, as in the picture. It should hold @ 48-55 PSI or a good 10 minutes after the pump stops (rest pressure)

Most Likely it is just the IAC Valve sticking, this is why it starts fine when it is already warm.

2000 Ford Taurus no heat – new thermostat, new heater core

2000 Ford Taurus no heat – new thermostat, new heater core, flushed system, blower working and the temperature control that opens and closes the door over the heater core is working. What could be the problem? What else should I check? Already Tried: New thermostat and flushed system. Heater core is about six months old checked to make sure it was not blocked both inlet and outlet hoses are hot. Blower is strong switch that regulates air flow over heater core is working.

Answer:
If the heater hoses are both hot and the fan motor is operational (just blows cold) then your blend door is not moving. Since you said the control switch is working, the only thing left would be the blend door actuator.

intermittently experienced a rubbing sound when moving into or out of a parking space

I have a 2003 Trailblazer Ext with @ 63,000 miles. The past two years I have intermittently experienced a rubbing sound when moving into or out of a parking space. On a few occasions, I have lost my powersteering. I just had the powersteering system flushed and replaced new fluid. I also was told that the serpentine belt was showing signs of cracking and it was replaced. My dealer cannot get the problem to duplicate while they have the car. When I picked my car up yesterday after having this work done, it immediately made the loud rubbing noise when I was backing out of the parking spot and again when I pulled forward. Of course, the mechanics were all gone for the evening. Help Me!!! What could be causing this?

The car has the factory rims and the replacement tires are exactly the same as the original equipment.

Answer:
In your case, you are looking at needing to have the power-steering pump replaced to eliminate the intermittent loss of power steering if it reoccurs. If you are hearing the noise only when turn the wheel all the way, this is normal. The noise is the fluid bypassing in the power steering to keep the pressure from busting a hose.

If this is an abnormal noise, it could possible be worn hub bearings or ball joints. It sounds like the shop needs to dig a little deeper to pin point the exact cause.

Car dealers are making there best offers right Now!

Car dealers saw their worst sales month in more than 16 years in October. Looking to make up ground, they're offering some amazing deals this month.

General Motors has moved its usual holiday special - the Red Tag Event - to begin Nov. 1 this year. That means no haggle pricing and 10% discounts on everything GM makes. Toyota, known for being stingy with incentives, is continuing its first-ever zero percent financing offer through December. Not to be outdone, Nissan has followed suit, with zero percent financing available on some of its most popular models. Even BMW is in on the act with low-rate financing offers.

Whatever automakers tell the press about car prices, keep in mind that the best incentive may be the one you negotiate yourself. Dealers are reporting a 50 percent drop-off in foot traffic in showrooms as compared to last year. Low traffic means low sales and the potential to negotiate a great deal for the remaining buyers out there. Also, more and more 2009 models are hitting dealer lots, which means they have a need to unload the remaining 2008s. Before heading out, be sure to check out our guide to negotiating in a down market and use our online tool to get price quotes from multiple dealers. Full Story

I got my Chavailier serviced, car died & I couldn't get it started

Question:
Last Saturday I got my Chavailier serviced. Afterwards I went 5 miles & the car started to make a knocking sound, then started to shake. I pulled off the road into a driveway. The car died & I couldn't get it started. I called a tow truck & had it towed back to where I had it serviced. They said my timing chain went & it caused a rod to put 2 holes in the engine & I had no oil. I now of course need a new engine. Another mechanic told me that if the timing chain went, my car would have immediately stopped. He said either I had not had oil put back in the car, the plug was not put back properly or the wrong filter was installed. Who is right? Of course I was told I need to pay for a new engine.

Answer:
Another mechanic told me that if the timing chain went, my car would have immediately stopped. He said either I had not had oil put back in the car, the plug was not put back properly or the wrong filter was installed. Who is right?

This Mechanic is right. If the timing chain failed it would die immediately. And if the chain broke, it would not cause a rod to do anything....

getting a howling sound coming from the front end

Question:
2001 Dodge stratus se 3.0 and am getting a howling sound coming from the front end and a clicking noise when turning the wheel. i would like to know if anyone can give me some idea what the problem could be. Already Tried: looked to see if cv boot was ripped

Answer:
The howling sound is usually the hub bearing starting to go bad. In most cases you can drive down a straight road and swerve slightly left and then right and you will hear a change in pitch if the howling noise. I would recommend replacing both if this is the case.

Clicking noise when turning is caused by a cv half shaft going out(the boot does not have to be torn) or a hub bearing that has been making noise for a long time and neglected.

Air Power - 106 mpg and can travel at highway speeds.

Air Powered Car by MDI

A new carmaker has a plan for cheap, environmentally friendly cars to be built all over the country
An air-powered car? It may be available sooner than you think at a price tag that will hardly be a budget buster. The vehicle may not run like a speed racer on back road highways, but developer Zero Pollution Motors is betting consumers will be willing to fork over $20,000 for a vehicle that can motor around all day on nothing but air and a splash of salad oil, alcohol or possibly a pint of gasoline.

On highways, the CAV can cruise at interstate speeds for nearly 800 miles with a small motor that compresses outside air to keep the tank filled. The motor isn't finicky about fuel. It will burn gasoline or diesel as well as biodiesel, ethanol or vegetable oil.
This car leaves the highest-mpg vehicles you can buy right now in the dust. Even if it used only regular gasoline, the air car would average 106 mpg, more than double today's fuel sipping champ, the Toyota Prius. The air tank also can be refilled when it's not in use by being plugged into a wall socket and recharged with electricity as the motor compresses air. More

Brake pedal goes to the floor

Question:
95 chevy corsica has had the brakes changed, and master cylinder, and is still having problems stopping after driving several hundreds of miles. It just goes to the floor and does not want to stop Already Tried: changed brakes cleaned the rotors and master cylinder i do not know if this might have any relation to the anti lock system

Answer:
you are going to have to start by bleeding the brakes in the appropriate sequence and see where you stand from there. Make sure the rear brakes are adjusted properly. Many times by compressing the calipers the brakes need to be rebled. Follow the procedure below.

Remove master cylinder reservoir cover, then fill reservoir as necessary.
Attach one end of a clear plastic hose to rear bleeder valve of the brake control assembly, then put opposite end of the hose into a clean container.
While depressing brake pedal, slowly open bleeder valve, until fluid begins to flow.
Close valve and release brake pedal, then repeat procedure for front bleeder valve.
Ensure master cylinder is full, then raise and support vehicle.
Bleed wheel cylinders and calipers using the following sequence:

Right rear.
Left rear.
Right front.
Left front.
Lower vehicle and check fluid level in reservoir, fill as necessary.
Turn on ignition and note pedal travel and feel as follows:

If pedal feels firm and constant, start the engine and recheck pedal travel. If pedal still feels firm and constant, continue procedure.
If pedal feels soft or has excessive travel either initially or after engine is started, repeat bleeding procedure.
Road test vehicle, make several normal stops from a moderate speed, then make one or two ABS stops at approximately 50 mph.
Ensure pedal is still firm and constant.

Scan Tool Diagnostics

Well, it's that time of year again. Time to run the family's 1997 people hauler to the inspection station and run it through. You're not really looking forward to it because the Check Engine Light (MIL) came on yesterday. But you go on out and pull into line and wait your turn.

Well, it failed inspection.

Your vehicle has the second-generation OBD II diagnostic system. OBD II replaced the first-generation OBD I in 1994. OBD II is used by all automakers and is Federally mandated. The problem that DIY's run into is that you can no longer get diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) by watching the blinking MIL as you could with older computer controlled engines. Taking the vehicle into a shop that has the proper tools to diagnose the problem can be expensive, often $100.00 or more. The other option is to learn OBD II and do it your self. The thing is, you're going to need a scan tool.

Advice on Buying a New Car

When Purchasing a New Vehicle there are a few things you may wish to do before walking into the car dealer. Be sure you are prepared with all the information you can get. Spend time deciding what it is you want and stick to it. There are a few tips listed below to help you prepare for your next vehicle purchase. Here For pricing of NEW CARS

The best advice I can give you is to take your time when looking for a car, and don't make any rash, emotional car buying decisions.

Every car salesman you come into contact with will have only one thing on his or her mind; to get you to buy a car "today!" These people work under the assumption that you will never come back, so they have to close the deal while you're in there the first time.

Don't give into the pressure. Take your time and sleep on it . . . for several nights! You'll be amazed at how different your perspective will be on a car deal after a couple of days.

Don't let the car salesperson talk you into giving them any deposit before you are ready to buy. If you are paying cash forget about giving them a deposit and just pay for the car in full when you pick it up. Read Full Article

How do I program a remote keyless ?

Question:
2001 Oldsmobile Alero, How do I program a remote keyless ? everyone says it is a dealer job to program the remote.

ANSWER:

Transmitter Synchronization
Notes
Resynchronization may be necessary due to the security method used by the remote keyless entry system. The transmitter does not send the same signal twice to the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR).
The RCDLR will not respond to a signal that has been sent previously. This prevents anyone from recording and playing back the signal from the transmitter.
Resynchronization may be necessary under the following conditions:
The battery in the transmitter is very weak.
The battery in the transmitter was replaced.
The battery in the vehicle has been in a low or no charge condition for an extended period of time.
In order to resynchronize the transmitter with the RCDLR, perform the following steps:
Stand within 1.5 meters (5 ft) from the vehicle.
Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter for 7 seconds . The horn should chirp in order to confirm synchronization.

How do I change the Serpentine belt on a Ford Scorpio?

DRIVE BELTS

The tensioner used by Ford consists of a large clock spring wrapped around one bolt, engaging in an arm on which a pulley is mounted. Because the action of the spring is anticlockwise, when engaged the pulley pulls the drive belt at a pressure set by the spring. As the drive belt lengthens with wear, so the spring takes up the slack. Because of the constant tension drive belts last for years, but they should be checked regularly for signs of wear. The belt might become cracked across its width, normally in the grooved face, or it may become glazed or frayed in appearance.

NOTE: If the drivebelt tensioner(s) are in good order then they will swivel about the fulcrum bolt quite easily using only medium force. However, if the tensioners have corroded in place then considerable force may be required to release the tensioner - in this case additional leverage may be required and care used to avoid injury.

1997 pathfinder 3.3 v6 motor. i am getting no fire at all

QUESTION:
i have a 1997 pathfinder 3.3 v6 motor. i am getting no fire at all. i know there is a crank sensor and the dist. can anyone tell which is more likely to be the cause? i have some people tell they are bad for the dist. and then others tell the crank sensor

ANSWER:
The Cam sensor is the most common on that year Pathfinder. That is the one in the distributor. With no spark conditions, thats the first place I check! The way I check it is with a multimeter. I check voltages and grounds. If I have them, then it's normally the distributor. ( B/W wire = Battery voltage & B wire = ground.)Are you able to scan for codes? That would definitely help which it could be. I have really never seen those crank sensors fail, where I have seen distributor fail. I have also seen allot of New after market distributors not work also. Not to say that may happen to you, but please keep that in mind if you decide to go that route.

pcm 0745 the TCC is stuck off. what is the TCC and where?

Question:
1999 Cadillac devillie, pcm 0745 the TCC is stuck off. what is the TCC and where? I have tried the TPS at first from running symptoms but after learning to get the codes and reading the manual it says that its the TCC but do not know the actually definition of that abbreviation.I have a 98 with good trni was thinking of changing whole trani but alot of work!It seems to be fine in all gears but at acceleration it hesitates in overdrive and at stop lights the rpms are crazy up n down but if you place it in neutral it stops.Almost replaced the VSS but that would come with speedometer issues always?

Answer:
tcc stands for torque converter clutch. this is a solenoid that controls your torque converter. when it see the right parameter the torque converter gets lock up for better fuel economy on the highway. only on the hwy is the converter is suppose to lock up not in idle. if converter locks up in idle at a stop light the it may stall and make rpms jump. has this every stalled out on you? do you know where your tcc solenoid is and did you check power and ground to it? is the solenoid working as design? most time is a bad solenoid but also could just be a bad wire going to it. check the big trans wire connector and get a schematic for it to see if you have a bad wire or solenoid.

2009 Nissan Maxima

2009 NISSAN MAXIMA

MSRP: $29,290
Gas Mileage: 19 mpg city / 26 mpg hwy
Engine/s: 3.5L V6, 24 valve, 290 hp @ 6400 rpm
Transmission: VAR speed Automatic

Though the chassis and sheetmetal are new, performance will come from the standard 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve VQ-series V-6 engine that powered the previous-generation Maxima and nearly everything else in the Nissan fleet. This revised engine is now rated at 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 35 horsepower and nine lb-ft of torque over the 2008 Maxima engine. Will such impressive output make it a torque-steering beast? Nissan engineers say no and claim to have implemented appropriate countermeasures.

When I tried to start it both batteries were dead.

QUESTION:

I needed to move my truck to another location so I could work on the speedometer problem. When I tried to start it both batteries were dead. A battery charger was connect but with reversed polarity. Before I could stop it the charger was tuned on. I immediately turned it off and disconnected it. I've charged the batteries but now the truck won't start. I found a 10 amp fuse burnt (in a panel in the engine compartment). When I changed the fuse some light on the dash panel came on - in a dim state- and stayed on, until I removed the fuse. The truck won't start although it will turn over. The ignitor light does not come on any more. This is a 1999 E-450 cube van with a Power Stroke Diesel. Can you shed some light as to what might have happened to the electronics of the truck My biggest fear is the computer.

ANSWER:

Because you hooked your charger up backwards it likely you blew one of the fuse links at the starter solenoid on the passenger side inner fender. I'm enclosing a schematic for the fuse links. Take a 12 volt test light and move down the harness where the fuse links are located and check for 12 volts. I suspect you have blown one or more.

How to Scan for Trouble Codes (Check Engine Light)

How to Use an Engine Scanner The engine code scanner has made automotive repair easier than ever. When the check engine light comes on while driving it means there is a system that is having a problem. With the trouble code scanner you are able to retrieve the trouble code stored in the vehicles computer. Once the system has been identified replace the shorted senor or other repair and clear the codes out of the vehicle's computer. Once the codes have been cleared the computer will go into relearn procedure and run any number of system monitors to determine if the trouble has been properly repaired.

When the Check Engine Soon Light comes on , your first instinct is to pull over and check out the situation. This is not necessary. This is the vehicles way of letting you know at its earliest stage that an error has occurred. No need to panic. If you have been driving with that all annoying light on, remember this : Your gas mileage will improve if the necessary repairs are made.

My 2000 Caddy Dts is over heating. Yes it has a blown head

QUESTION:
My 2000 Caddy Dts is over heating. Yes it has a blown head gasket no doubt. However I want to solve the overheating problem that blew the gasket. The car overheats in 20 minutes. The upper radiator hose has burst twice. The water pump and thermostat are both new. I don't understand why there is enough pressure to burst the hose but not not venting from the reservoir cap at 16psi. Should the cap blow first before the hose. I feel there is a blockage some where. Can anyone help me with how the coolant flows so maybe i can find the blockage if there is one.

ANSWER:
From what you have stated, the problem would be the radiator cap. The cap should open at 16 psi and since it busted a hose, it had to be over 16 psi which means the cap should have opened up to releave the pressure into the overflow tank.

the clutch pedal stuck down to the floor.

QUESTION:
2004 Mini Cooper S, I started driving and the clutch pedal stuck down to the floor. I could not shift gears. I was able to pull the pedal up with my foot and drive the rest of the day with no problems. Today, it stuck to the floor again and I had to pull over because I could not shift gears. Once again, I could push the pedal back up with my foot and make it home. However, my husband notices something leaking when I pushed the clutch in and out.

ANSWER:
The leak you are seeing when you push the clutch is hydraulic fluid. The clutch is similar to the brake system in that they both require hydraulic pressure to be actuated. A leak such as the one you are seeing will definitely prevent you from being able to shift gears. Check the fluid level in the clutch reservoir which is under the hood close to the fire wall. If the fluid is low, you need to find out where the leak is coming from. The leak will either come from the clutch reservoir, the clutch cylinder which is attached to the pedal on the engine side of the fire wall, the slave cylinder which is in the transmission bell housing, or one of the lines that connects these components.

replaced ac compressor and accumulator, converted to 134A, still no cold air

'89 F150 - replaced ac compressor and accumulator, converted to 134A, still no cold air. I think I need to replace orifice tube or expansion valve after following up a bit more. (Haynes book isn't the most comprehensive of course.) If I'm on the right track, I believe I have one or the other, not both. And I understand I may have a "blue tube" or "red tube" orifice. (I believe that's what my system has, not expansion valve??) If I do have an expansion valve, where is it located?? If orifice tube, which one?? It's a 4x4 with a 5.8l motor, auto trans.,XLT Lariat (if that matters). Appreciate any help you can offer. I guess I should break down and get a real shop manual.

ANSWER:
Have you checked pressure low and high,it will let you know if you are having a blockage, due to debris clogging the orifice tube screen. This is a common problem when a compressor fails You have no expansion valve, the orifice is in the Evaporator inlet, to get it you must discharge the system and disconnect the line. You can switch to the blue orifice or get a variable orifice tube . You then need to evacuate the system with a vacuum pump, and charge to 80% of what is stated on the label for freon capacity when it used with R12.Here is a chart that shows the pressure readings you should have.If you have a blockage, the low side will be low and the high side higher than normal. Hope you get it fixed,it sounds like the orifice is the problem, here is a link that shows what it may look like, and how to go about fixing it, you may have to copy and paste to your browser http://www.ackits.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=01&Category_Code=BlackDeath

Low Engine Oil Light came on when I started my car this morning

QUESTION:
I have a 2000 Monte Carlo SS, 92K miles. I change the oil regularly between 3K - 4K miles. I check the oil three to four times in that interval. I have never had to add oil. I have never noticed leak spots under the car. This morning, when I started the car the Low Engine Oil Light came on. I shut it off, checked the oil and it was low. I re-started the engine and the light did not come back on. What's up with this?

ANSWER:
Either you have a new leak or the oil change place did not completely fill the oil. Sometimes the low oil light will come on when the oil is not low, this would indicate a faulty oil level sensor.

Replacing Rear Drum Brakes

Complete Step by Step Instructions for replacing rear drum style brakes

If you follow these steps you are assured that your brakes will NOT squeal. If you just do a "pad slap" you can count on brake noise. There are plenty of fly by night or mom and pop garages around that publicize they can do you a complete brake job for cheap. Well, sometimes you get what you pay for. If they just swap out the parts without following each step, then you will end up with noisy brakes and who wants that. If you follow the link above you will see just how much is involved and what actually goes into an actual complete brake job.

My car will start but will not move out of reverse

Question:
1997 corvette c5 8 cylinder; I just replaced the battery in my car. My car will start but will not move out of reverse which is the gear it was in when it stalled. It was found that the battery was dead so I replaced it. Is there a code reset that needs to be done?

Answer;
Your vehicle should not be able to start in reverse gear. If it does, then your position switch (neutral safety switch) is malfunctioning and should be replaced.

If you mean the shifter moves just fine but the vehicle it self is stuck in reverse no matter where you put the shifter, then either the shifter cable has become disconnected or your trans is broken internally. Put the vehicle on a rack and have someone move the shifter and see if the manual gear selector on the side of the transmission is moving. not.. replace shifter cable. If it does move, rebuild transmission, if you try to put it in gear it won't go to any gear. It will just start to roll if you release the emergency brake , then either the shifter cable has become disconnected or your trans is broken internally. Put the vehicle on a rack and have someone move the shifter and see if the manual gear selector on the side of the transmission is moving. not.. replace shifter cable. If it does move, rebuild transmission.

it ran hot on me last night and also made a few noises

Question:
I have a 99 cougar 6cyl and it ran hot on me last night and also made a few noises and went dead on me,i crank it back up and got it home and popped the hood there were smoke coming from the coolant jug.what could be some diagnostics for this problem?

Answer:
You need to check the coolant level once the vehicle has cooled off. Here are the main reasons a vehicle will overheat.1. Faulty thermostat - Thermostat is usually located before the radiator inside the upper radiator hose. When the temperature of the vehicle gets to "operating temperature" the thermostat will open, allowing coolant to flow through the radiator, where it's cooled.2. Faulty water pump - The water pump helps build up the pressure to make sure the coolant will is flowing. Coolant can become restricted.` 3. Restriction in Radiator will comprimise coolant flow4. radiator fans keep the radiator cool when the vehicle is not moving. If they do not activate at idle, the vehicle can overheat.

Is ok to reuse Gasket which was just install ?

QUESTION:
I have a 1963 Pontiac lemans 185. I just finish rebuilding motor small four cylinder. After putting the engine together I thought I made a mistake. Which caused me remove again the head, intake manifold, and valley pan. I was very upset that I push back to disassy as I worked so hard to product good product. I used copper top on both gaskets, head and intake. The push to disassy was bad choice as discover that my head gasket was install correctly. My question is ok that I reused the gaskets as they were never ran on engine. The intake gasket did take few

ANSWER:
Once head gaskets are torqued down they should not be reused even if the engine has not been run. Once the gaskets compress from torquing, trying to reuse them will ususlly result in a leak. The same rule would apply for the intake manifold.
Don't get me wrong here, some have done it and had sucess but many gaskets have failed when reused. I would not suggest reusing them.

The a/c was working poorly, only a 20degree drop from ambient temps

Question:
I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan, 3.3Liter engine. The a/c was working poorly, only a 20degree drop from ambient temps. The lo side reads 25 psi, the high side reads 50psi., outside air temps in the nineties. The compressor does engage and runs all the time. The system is working partially as a steady drops of water come from the drain. The system runs on 134 and will not take any charging.Any suggestions would be appreciated. Already Tried: Replaced dryer, replaced compressor, evacuated and charged system

Answer;
From the pressures you describe it sounds like the charge is low. If it won't take a charge then you must have a restriction in the system. Most likely the condensor.

Air Conditioning Blows Hot?

Any automotive air conditioning system employs four basic parts-a mechanical compressor, driven by the vehicle's engine; an expansion valve, which is a restriction the compressor pumps against; and two heat exchangers, the evaporator and the condenser. In addition, there is the refrigerant that flows through this system. If the system is low on the refrigerant ( R134a for automotive use) than the system will blow hot air. In most cases the vehicles system can be recharged. Check for leaks before recharging.

Test and Maintain your Car Battery

Batteries can be recharged because the chemical reactions they use are reversible; they are recharged by running a charging current through the battery, but in the opposite direction of the discharge current. Rechargeable batteries can be charged hundreds of times before wearing out; and even after wearing out some can be recycled.

Always keep your battery terminal ends clean and free of corrosion on the inside as well as out. You can use boiling water to remove the majority of the corrosion and then follow up with a wire brush. On some model cars equipped with anti- theft system it is important to have your security codes before you disconnect your battery or you may not be able to start your car. Another way is to attach a battery charger to the battery cables before disconnecting the battery to allow power to the vehicles computer during battery maintenance

started bogging and know I cant go over 5 miles an hour in first gear

Question:
I have a 2002 Nissan Sentra and i think I hit the converter when I bottomed out going up a bridge last week. Yesterday I was driving home and it started bogging and know I cant go over 5 miles an hour in first gear, and it is surging real bad.

Answer:
It is very possible when you bottomed out you created a restriction in the exhaust. From what you are describing, that is exactly what it sounds like. If you look under the car, can you see any damage such as bent exhaust pipes? The best way to verify a restriction in the exhaust system(if you don't have a vacuum gage) is to remove the exhaust bolts from the front pipe and drive the car- if it has power then you know the problem is in the exhaust.

Which oil should I use in my 95 Toyota Camry with 200k miles.

Just use the same regular oil that is recommended by the manufacturer.

They have high mileage oils, but most of these are synthetic blends...and synthetics are bad because they don't get contaminated. This lets the blowby gasses sit on top of the oil and when the oil is up in the engine, there is a fresh shot of raw gas sitting in the oil pan for the pump to pick up and try to lubricate the engine with...THAT is not a good situation to be in. This will usually destroy the oil pump before it hurts anything else, though. FYI, I have never had to change an oil pump on an engine that used regular oil..they have all been on engines that run synthetics.

I recently replaced the alternator

Question:
I recently replaced the alternator in my 1997 GMC Sierra. However, when I initially start the truck it still cranks on the starter initially. The starter is good, so I believe there may be a problem in the fuel injection system. Until I can get that checked out though I have received two pieces of conflicting advice about how to keep from ruining the starter and I was wondering which is the better of the two. 1) use starter fluid 2) run fuel cleaner every tank of gas

Answer:
I would have a fuel pressure test done and see what you have for pressure, if the pressure is low the truck will be hard to start. You can run fuel injector cleaner about every 3000 miles i would use and injector cleaner called chevron techron. As far as I'm concerned its the best stuff for cleaning the injectors and the upper intake system, I wouldn't keep using starting it can cause damage over time.

gmc pickup speedometer shows zero

Question:
2004 gmc pickup speedometer shows zero and abs light and servivce brake lights on trani shifts goofy like truck is not getting road speed signal

Answer:
All these problems are related to not getting a signal from the vehicle speed sensor. The proper way to test this is with the use of a scan tool, checking for codes and reading the sensor outputs to the trucks computer. I will send you a picture showing the sensor location,it is #4 in the illustration, you can check to see it the wiring to it is intact. The sensor is held on by one bolt, and easy to replace. It cost approx. 25.00. But replacing it with out the testing is a gamble.

JUST INSTALLED A NEW MAF SENSOR

Question:
I JUST INSTALLED A NEW MAF SENSOR ON MY 91 TOWN CAR AND NOW THE ENGINE WONT TURN ON EVEN THOUGH ALL THE LIGHTS AND ELECTRICAL THINGS FUNCTION LIKE REGULAR. WHAT DID I DO WRONG? IT'S A SIMPLE PROCESS????

Answer:

There is no connection between the MAF sensor wiring and the starter circuit wiring. The only possible things that could have happened here would be that either the battery cable connection is poor (if you removed one cable to do the sensor replacement) or you may have accidentally bumped a wire connected to the starter solenoid during the MAF sensor replacement. In particular, check to see if the small light gauge wire from the ignition switch circuit is connected securely to the starter solenoid S terminal. Also, (this may sound stupid, but it has happened to all of us at one time or another) make sure the vehicle is all the way in PARK position, or try starting it in neutral. Make sure that the battery voltage is 12 volts or higher; ford starters will not operate on lower voltage even though all other accessories will.

Is the Toyota Prius Really Green.

I really get annoyed by a lot of this feel good "green" stuff. Have you read the energy analysis that said that it takes 113,000,000 BTU to build a Toyota Prius (mostly because of the 30# of Nickle in the battery). Since gasoline has about 113,000 BTU/gallon, a Prius actually clocks up 1,000 gallons usage before it even rolls off the lot. Yeah, that's got to be green....

GM Dex-Cool/ Intake Manifold Gasket Class Action Lawsuit Settlement Reached March 20th, 2008

NATIONWIDE SETTLEMENT REACHED IN GM/DEX-COOL CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
On March 20, 2008, the California Superior Court granted preliminary approval to the class action settlement reached with General Motors in the GM/Dex-Cool class action lawsuit. This settlement affects people who purchased or leased a “covered vehicle” anywhere in the United States other than Missouri. A separate settlement has been reached for those who purchased or leased their vehicle in Missouri, which will offer the same benefits but will be separately approved by a Missouri court.
The lawsuits were filed on behalf of owners of General Motors vehicles, which were factory-filled with “Dex-Cool” coolant. In summary, the lawsuits alleged that Dex-Cool degraded certain vehicles’ intake manifold gaskets and other engine sealability components, and that in certain other vehicles, Dex-Cool formed a rusty sludge, clogging the vehicles’ cooling systems and causing vehicles to overheat.
Terms of the Settlement:
You may be eligible to receive between $50 and $800 in cash reimbursement under the settlement if you have paid for a covered repair by May 30, 2008, and if you submit a claim by October 27, 2008. If you paid for multiple covered repairs, you may be eligible to receive multiple cash reimbursements provided you submit a separate claim for each repair.

Have had it at the dealership

Question:
Have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee automatic with 226,000 km on it. Have had the starter replaced but still have problems starting jeep. Will start okay a few times but then will need to try up to 5 times (turning the key - no noise but lights on dashboard come on, etc.) before it will start. Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Already Tried:
Have had it at the dealership - they replaced starter but that did not help at all. The start problems usually happens when the car has been parked for less than an hour but this week it started even when parked overnight. It will be okay for about 4 time parked but then will not start. Have to turn the key in the ignition a few times before it catches. The dealership has no idea what the problem is as the car works okay when it has been left there (left twice, overnight for them to test during the day, etc.) Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer:
I would definitely suspect you have a problem either with the cables for the starter. Or you have a bad or failing starter relay. But lets get the OBD or on board diagnostics. They can often point in a good direction.

Here is general procedure for getting engine codes by using the flash method.
Turn the key from off to on three times within five seconds. Then watch the CHECK ENGINE lamp. (odometer on digital odometers will show codes not flash) When you hit the proper rhythm ( this varies some from vehicle to vehicle and takes a few tries sometimes ), the MIL will stay lit longer than normal, go out and then start flashing.
Count the flashes. There will be short pauses between sets of flashes to indicate you're going to another number. The last set of flashes will always be 5-5, or code 55, which means end of test. All the codes will have two digits to them. You can repeat this as many times as needed to get a feel for how it works. If the PCM or battery has been disconnected within the last month or so, the first code you'll see is 1-2 (code 12) which indicates a recent loss of memory. be careful not to misread numbers so like 1-2 becomes a 3 or 2-3 becomes 3-2. Do this a few times to check and always write them down for future reference. Remember these codes do not say parts are bad only that they got or receive a bad signal. SO it maybe part before or after them that needs to be replaced.

My Car Eats Batteries!!

Question:

2001 Chevy Impala mileage: 55,000. Hi...my girlfriend's old Impala eats batteries! We had one burst last month, thought it frozen. Got a replacement, now this one is belching sulfurous gasses and is warm to the touch after the car has run for a little while. Not cold enough to freeze - possible charging system problem? Sometimes the interior lights/radio lights go dim, then bright again, also. The alternator is putting out about 14.7 volts, the battery is charged to about 13.5 volts, seems high. I thought maybe the voltage regulator could be bad, but don't know where it is on that year vehicle! Otherwise a great low-mileage nana car...any advice you guys could give on where to start looking for the problem would be appreciated!

Answer:

Check the ground wires to make sure they are in place and making good contact, especially the battery cable ground connection to the motor. If this checks out okay, you probably have a faulty alternator. BTW you will need to replace the battery again also. It cant take over charging.

Starting - Accelerating problems

Question:

'99 Acura Integra GSR 97,000miles. The problem started with what i thought was just bad spark plugs. The car would occasionally misfire when i gave it gas. I changed the spark plugs and the misfiring increased and the car became almost impossible to start. I pulled the plugs and checked the gaps again and the plugs where dark and saturated with fuel. I also noticed while trying to start it again several minutes later that you can smell strong gas almost immediately after trying to start it. it seems to idle fine when it does start, but as soon as you tap the gas it either stalls are comes close to it. It has good spark also.

Answer:

Just a thought, but plugs wires come to mind. Especially when you said it ran worse after the new plugs were put in. Tugging and pulling on those wires breaks down the composite conductivity of the wires. The hesitation is also a symptom.

1997 Ford Taurus Starter problems

Question:

We replace the starter but when we went to put the positive cable back on the battery the starter started to crank without the engine being turned on. Did we put the starter on wrong?

Answer:

The problem is that on the back of the starter there is a small wire that goes to the "s" terminal and The positive cable. The positive cable is touching the small wire , so the Starter is getting power on the "s" terminal wire and thinks you want the starter to crank. Separate the two wires from touching and all should be fine once more.

A week or so later they stopped working and now I still can''t get them to work. I need to know if the problem could be in the power distribution box with the fuse. My power seat still works but didn''t know if they are tied in together. Or is it in the switch controls on my arm rest... Alreday tried fuses. It is 2000 Ford Explorer.

Answer:

If all the windows are having an issue of not going up, then it is most likely the control module(drivers door switch unit) or the window motor breaker.
If it is just happening with one window ( most likely the drivers window as you use it more often) the the window motor needs to be replaced.

Low Coolant Light On

Question:

I have a 1999 Ford Taurus 3.0. I Had the coolant system flushed out and about a month after the water pump went out. I replaced the water pump and filled the system per owners manual. Since, the 'LOW COOLANT' light remains on. The temperature gauge is not showing it is running hot. What can I do?

Answer:

The low coolant sensor is in the plastic recovery tank, new revised Ford fill procedure is fill cold to the hot line...this may help, if not the sensor will need to be swapped out!

1992 Ford F150 Won't crank-Fuel related

Question:
I have a 1992 Ford F150 that I drive daily to work. Drove home after work a few days ago (it ran great on the way home), parked it, went out the next day to go to work---wouldn't start. Battery tests good, put on new plugs(6), new coil, new relay, new battery cable ends, new fuel filter---nothing. Checked fuses, all are testing good. Looked for and "in-line" fuse that is supposed to go to the fuel tanks (dual tanks on this truck), and I cannot find it. Where is it? Also, what do you think the problem might be? I can't seem to hear the fuel pump pumping during the times I have tried to get it cranked.

Answer:

Have you tried both tanks? The engine really only needs good compression, spark at the right time and adequate fuel pressure. Since you drove it the day before, it sounds like you have good compression. On top of the fuel rail, there's what looks like a little schrader valve which is the fuel pressure port. Pressure should be in the high 30's to low 40's psi with the key on but engine off. Then check to see if you're getting good spark while cranking the truck.

Electrical Problem

Question:

I have a 1995 Buick Regal, Automatic with 158,960 miles on it. The problem that I have is every time I press the brake pedal my brake lights do not come on. I have checked the bulbs and fuses and they are good. What could it be?

Answer:

Find the brake switch on the brake pedal, follow it till you see the switch disconnect. Disconnect it and put a jumper on the 2 terminals and see if it comes on. If it does light up, then you will just need to replace the brake light switch. If it does not come on, then you will need to trace your wiring and repair as needed. A helpful Resource

Starting Trouble

Question:

2003 GMC Suburban, mileage: 95,000. When I turn the key all dash messages come up as normal and I can hear the starter solenoid switch, yet the starter and engine will not turn over. It appeared that I had full electrical power (bright lights etc.). I jumped it, charged it still wouldn't start. I took the battery in; they tested the battery and determined that it was bad. I replaced with new battery. I still have the same problems and symptoms. Checked fuses, all look good. A couple weeks ago I turned key and this happened, then tried a couple more times and it fired up strong. Since then it has started repeatedly without problems, now symptom has returned. What are the most likely problems?

Answer:

More than likely, the starter is shorted and needs replacing.

Battery

Chrysler Concorde - Won't Start

Question:

1999 Chrysler Concorde, mileage: 80,000. Won't start in cold weather. During the summer it starts right up but as the temperature falls the harder it is to start. It did the same thing last winter too. I tried disconnecting the MAP sensor but it didn't make any difference. When I start the car it cranks and tries to fire up then cranks again. Some times it takes 4 or 5 times of trying and some times more, but if it is 50 degrees or warmer outside it fires right up. Also, when it does finally start and I drive a ways, it will start again without a problem. It only does this when it sits for awhile in cold temperatures I hope this gives you enough info.

Answer:

First scan the PCM for trouble codes using a hand held engine scanner, then repair codes by replacing failed sensor as needed. If no codes are present check fuel pump pressure at the time of failure, replace as needed. More than likely you just need to replace your IAC valve as it is sticking.

How To Repair/Check Fuses

There are two ways to check fuses. The first is the good old fashion way of removing each fuse and visually inspecting each fuse. It's time consuming but effective. And the other way that is much faster and easier, but you need a "test light" before you can begin. Turn the key to the "on" position (do not start), ground your test light lead to a good ground source, like a metal brace under the dash, seat mount bolt or under hood brace. Then lightly touch the service port at the top of the fuse on both sides. If the test light illuminates on both sides of the fuse, the fuse is ok and working properly. If the fuse lights the test light on one side it is blown and needs to be replaced.

Vegetable Fuel

So can the everyday diesel engines of today run on vegetable oil.... The answer is yes! So why don't we? The first deterrent is that the US government has a strict law against it. Why? Well in the US the government taxes the fuel used in cars and does not tax food, so it would be bad for business. There is a big and healthy fine if you are caught trying to do so. This is why all the myth busters and testers out there perform there tests with used vegetable oil or fryer grease they obtain legally from a restaurant.

The fuel mileage is the same for both fuels and no modification needs to be done to the engine for it to run on the vegetable oil. This engine was designed from day one by Rudolf Diesel to run on vegetable oil. More..

2001 GMC Sierra C3
2002 GMC Sierra Denali
2002 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT

Condition

Some customers may comment that they cannot control the HVAC system modes and/or the temperature. These concerns may be intermittent.

Cause

There may be poor terminal contact and/or bent terminals in connectors C206 (RPO C68 automatic HVAC controls) or C296 (RPO C60 manual HVAC controls). Excessive tension on the wires due to the wiring harness being misrouted in the instrument panel carrier may cause these conditions.

Correction

Remove the Air Bag fuse.
Disconnect the steering wheel and instrument panel (IP) air bag connectors. Refer to the SIR subsection of the Restraints section of the Service Manual for connector locations.
Remove the IP upper trim pad.
Locate connector C206 (6 cavities) or C296 (8 cavities). The connector is attached to a metal brace on the far right side of the IP carrier above the IP air distributor duct.
Inspect the routing of the wiring harness to the connector. The proper routing of the wiring harness is above the air distributor duct with no tension on the terminals in the connector. The routing is improper if the wiring harness is below the air distributor duct with excessive tension on the terminals in the connector. The excessive tension may cause poor terminal contact, resulting in open circuits, in the connector. The wires may also pull the terminals out of the connector or pull out of the terminal itself.
If the harness is routed properly, contact Technical Assistance for further information.
If the harness is misrouted, remove the connector from the brace.
Disconnect the connector.
Perform a pin drag test on the female terminals.
Inspect the male terminals for straightness.
Inspect the wire to terminal connection to insure that no wires have pulled out of the terminals.
Reroute the wiring harness above the air distributor duct.
Firmly reconnect and reseat the connector.
Reattach the connector to the metal brace.
Reinstall the IP upper trim pad.
Turn Off the ignition and reconnect the steering wheel and IP air bags.
Reinstall the Air Bag fuse.
Turn ON the ignition and verify that the air bag light flashes seven times and goes out.
Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have been set.
Verify proper operation of the HVAC system mode and temperature controls.
